I attended one of the largest all-electric fun flys held in the
nation. This event was the N.E.A.T Fair (Northeast Aircraft
Technology) gathering held for the tenth consecutive year in a
beautiful flying venue in Downsville, NY , in the southeastern part of
the state. For three days some 250-300 pilots flew upwards of 600
planes comprised of an endless parade of large and small, fast and
slow, new and vintage
models---all powered by electric motors. (Boy was it quiet.)
I mention all this not necessarily to talk you into
attending next year's function, but simply to urge our members to
attend events outside our club environs. A good local example is the
Warbirds Over Delaware show held each June at Lum's Pong near Newark.
Aside from that spectacular show there are many others listed every
month in Model Aviation, near the back of the magazine. Just pick out the month and state that interests you.
I guarantee you'll be pleased that you took the time to see how others exploit this wonderful world of RC modeling.
Here's a couple of pics I took.
The first is an Old Timer plane, a Quaker, built by a guy
who could not decide between glow and electric, so he installed both.
Actually the Brown Jr. motor was real, but only a gutted casting, as
the plane flew under e-power. The owner said he needed added weight in
the front anyway.
The second is a simultaneous launch of about 20 planes for an electric combat demo. The photo only shows 5-6 models.
